چکیده

The elderly are characterized by immunosenescence which is accompanied by an increase in the incidence of infectious diseases, especially in the intestinal tract. There is evidence suggesting that certain probiotic organisms have immunomodulatory properties. Therefore, the effects of feeding fermented milk products on the intestinal mucosal immune response was examined in young and senescent rats. Serum anticholera toxin (CTx) immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibody titers were significantly higher in kefir-fed young rats in comparison to young control-fed (no kefir) animals. This increase was accompanied by enhanced in vitro IgA antibody secretion by Peyer’s patch and intestinal lamina propria lymphocytes. No similar enhancements of serum or lymphocyte IgA antibody responses were observed in the kefir-fed versus control-fed old rats. The fact that kefir enhanced responses were observed only in the young rats suggests that probiotics may affect the intestinal immune response differentially in young and old animals.

Development of Functional Foods

Recent advances in intestinal microbiota research are the background for the appearance of functional foods. Lactic fermentation products are included in the functional foods and classified into 3 groups based on their mechanisms of action: probiotics, prebiotics and biogenics. Probiotics are viable microorganisms, such as lactobacilli and bifidobacteria, that beneficially affect the host by im...

Clinical efficacy and mechanism of probiotics in allergic diseases

A complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors partially contributes to the development of allergic diseases by affecting development during prenatal and early life. To explain the dramatic increase in the prevalence of allergic diseases, the hygiene hypothesis proposed that early exposure to infection prevented allergic diseases. The hygiene hypothesis has changed to the microbi...

Probiotics: what are they? What are their effects on gut physiology?

Probiotics can be defined as microbial cells that have a beneficial effect on the health and well-being of the host. Since the gastrointestinal mucosa is the surface of contact with probiotics, it seems evident that the first effects of probiotics relate to digestive function. A brief review of the literature indicates that probiotics have very few effects on the main physiological functions of...

Probiotics effects on gastrointestinal function: beyond the gut?

The digestive tract works through a complex network of integrative functions. At the level of the gut, this integration occurs between the immune, neuromotor and enteroendocrine systems, coordinating the physical and chemical elements of the intestinal barrier in order to facilitate digestion whilst protecting the gut from unwanted components of the luminal contents. Gastrointestinal function i...
